Beauty of Simplicity, A Nebulex Growth Story Featuring: HydroBall

What would you use to write in outer space?

HVAC engineers are acutely aware of the operational difficulties when there is scaling and fouling on condenser or heat exchanger tubes. The entire system needs to be shut down for hours just for manual cleaning.

This led Peter, CEO of Hydroball Technics and a mechanical engineer by training, to design and invent “HydroBall”, an automatic tube cleaning system. What Peter saw was a simple problem with a simple solution: utilizing the pressure difference between cooling water supply and return pipes to circulate oversized sponge balls to clean the tubes.

Amongst its many accolades and awards, HydroBall is most proud to be conferred the “Innovator Award” at the 2004 “The Enterprise Challenge”. Indeed, HydroBall has come a long way since, completing almost 200 projects in nearly 10 countries. Eliminating the need for electrical power, additional water, system shutdown, arduous labour and chemical exposure, HydroBall is a truly cost-effective and elegant solution. There is no good reason for the business not to grow.

But you can have the best of features and all the reasons in a good product or service, it doesn’t guarantee a sale. The challenge that Hydroball is facing is not so much in convincing people in the value of the product, but in minimizing the customers’ concern over switching costs. After all it takes time for people to accept, familiarize and settle into something new and different.

Nebulex Recommends: Novel ideas need time to sink in, especially when the legacy effect of the existing system is strong, and Hydroball will need to re-engineer the customers’ cost and benefit perceptions. Just as the Hydroball system itself exudes great beauty in its simplicity, Hydroball will need to simplify its market communication to address the customers’ cost and benefit concerns with beautiful pinpoint accuracy.

Closing Thought: Sometimes the most complex of problems are solved with the simplest of solutions, whether it’s writing in outer space or cleaning HVAC system tubes. And when we also communicate simply but beautifully, there would definitely be more effectiveness in sales efforts.
